Smart Meets Elegant on GE's New Connected Oven

GE's flagship wall oven is smarter than it looks.

Just because an appliance is smart doesn't mean it has to be complex. In fact, GE's latest smart wall oven won us over with its simple functionality.

We recently had a chance to try out the PT9050SFSS, a wall oven that debuts GE's new Brillion smartphone app, Notification Lighting, and a host of other features. Its smart functionality makes it easier to use, not more confusing.

Behind the oven's classic looks, there's a ton of available connectivity. Just push the Remote Enable button, and you'll be able to control the oven from your iPhone or Android phone thanks to the GE Brillion app. With it, you can change a temperature, preheat your oven, and check or set a timer even if you're nowhere near the kitchen.

The timer is also all new. In addition to the traditional countdown clock, a strip of lights indicates how much longer an oven has before its preheated, or how long before a dish is ready. GE calls it Notification Lighting, and we think it's a great idea. If you're busy cooking, it helps to get information at a glance.

There's also a whole new convection system. GE says the PT9050SFSS' redesigned airflow helps evenness regardless of what kind of pan you're using. We're looking forward to putting that claim to the test as soon as we get this wall oven in the lab.

GE's Brillion app and Notification Lighting prove that smart appliances don't need built-in touchscreens or fancy graphics to succeed. They do, however, need to be useful for consumers, and that's where GE comes out ahead.
