Outdoor pizza ovens are typically thought of as luxury appliances thanks to their huge size and high cost of installation—not to mention the fact that they're just for cooking pizzas. Consider the $8,000 Kalamazoo outdoor pizza oven. It's an extravagance of epic proportions.

But why? Pizza isn't a luxury, so why should pizza ovens command luxury prices?

Pizza isn't a luxury, so why should pizza ovens command luxury prices?

The problem is that it's expensive to create a cooking device that can reliably reach temperatures upwards of 800°F. You either need a super-efficient gas-powered furnace like the Kalamazoo uses, or a true wood-fired brick oven. Thus far, both options have been prohibitively expensive. But do they have to be?

The creators of the Uuni 2 don't think so. Their product promises to combine the best of both worlds: It's a self-contained, portable, stainless-steel, wood-fired pizza oven designed for outdoor use, and it can cook a small pizza in about two minutes. Oh, and it costs $299.

How is this possible? Through smart design. The Uuni 2 burns wood pellets—like the kind you'd use in a smoker—and features an aluminum baking board, which is more conductive than either stone or stainless steel.

According to the company website, the Uuni 2 can reach temperatures of up to 840°F—more than enough to make delicious Neapolitan-style artisan pizzas in your backyard.

The only downside is that you'll have to maintain a ready supply of wood pellets, but since the Uuni 2 takes garden variety bbq pellets, it shouldn't be a big hurdle. Your local Home Depot has you covered. Did we mention this thing costs $299? That's a hot deal.
