Ask any barbecue enthusiast: Meat is notoriously temperamental. It's tough to nail that perfect temperature, and the higher the quality of your cut, the more attention it'll demand. You might even say, the steaks are raised.

That's why a good thermometer or temperature probe is so important for smoking, roasting, and barbecuing. The problem? They usually involve a tangle of wires and probes, or at least require you to poke and re-poke the meat.

That's where Meater comes in. It's a wireless meat thermometer designed to kick these problems in the (pork) butt. And it's currently a smashing success on Kickstarter.

Meater features a dual-sensor mechanism that lets you remotely monitor both the internal temperature of your meat and the ambient external temperature inside your cooker. With the Meater app, you can instruct the device to notify you (via Bluetooth) when your meat hits the desired temp.

The app will also estimate how much time is left until your meat is done, and what temperature it's likely to reach while resting, once you take it off the heat.

The wireless design has plenty of advantages. While digital probes can be quite accurate, many are sensitive to high heat, limiting their use to low-temp smokers. Even then, the wires can be a hassle to deal with. Since everyone has a smartphone these days, doesn't it make more sense to just deliver the information to a phone, where it can be more conveniently processed?

Meater's creators say the device uses patented technology to protect its internals high temperatures. The internal sensor can register temps up to 212°F, while the external probe can work up to 527°F. The device also includes a rechargeable battery that will last for up to 48 hours of continuous cooking.

Meater currently has 12 days to go on its Kickstarter campaign, but has already smashed its initial funding goal of $100,000. To date, it has generated more than $400,000 from well over 3,000 individual backers. If you'd like to pick one up for yourself, you can preorder through the Kickstarter campaign for as little as $59.
