However, the Frigidaire FPEF3077QF—which this range is almost identical to—sells for $879, and we really like its streamlined looks. That's why it earned our coveted Best of Year award.

If Sears drops the price of the 95053, or if you prefer the looks of this Kenmore, read on to learn more.

Features

5-Burner Cooktop—A warming zone and four burners with a dual-element burner that switches between 9” and 12”

Turbo Boil FLEX—A 3200-watt element pairs high and low wattage in a single burner so you can warm, sear, boil and simmer—all of which it did well in our tests

Slow Cook—It claims to do a better job at low and slow roasting, although we weren't impressed with how the 95053 roasted

Warm Zone— For reheating, melting and keeping food at a ready-to-serve temperature

Dual True Convection—Uses 2 fans and a third hidden heat element to heat and bake food evenly—a feature that worked better on some items than others

Self-Clean Mode—It has the option of a 2-, 3- or 4-hour cycle for different size messes

What user reviews say

Owners of this range seem to like it. With nearly 70 reviews on Sears, it averages 4 stars. One user loves its “speed of boiling, the warming drawer, the convection oven, the three-sized front burner,” but says the cooktop is prone to scratching—an issue with almost all glass cooktops. Another loves the large size of the 6.1 cubic-foot oven, but warns about a slow preheat (we had the same issue).

What we found

User reviews can't compare the the Kenmore 95053 to the competition, but we can. That's why we put it through the same battery of tests we use on every range we evaluate to see how well it performed.

We checked high and low temperatures for each of the burners, examined how evenly it heated a pan, baked cakes and cookies, and how quickly it preheated to 350ºF. We scored the food on a scale of 10 compared to the rest of the ovens and ranges we've tested this year.

TIME TO PREHEAT TO 350ºF 12:15 on standard, 11:14 on convection. This is a pretty low score compared to the other ovens we’ve tested, some of which preheated in under 10 minutes.

COOKIES We rank consistency based on color and doneness, and the cookies we baked in the 95053 were a 6.9/10 using a standard bake setting. When we turned on convection, however, we noticed that cookies were more evenly baked.

CAKE

We measure the height of a baked cake at several points to see how well it rose, and we also test for burned and underdone spots on the top and bottom. This range got a 5.8/10 for consistency, with similar results regardless of whether we used convection.

PORK Roasted pork was very uneven on regular mode. Roasting markedly improved on convection, thought it still wasn't as good as other ovens we've tested. Overall, it scored a 2.9/10 for roasting consistency.

This toast serves as a heat map of the broiler, and you can see how unevenly it heats.

This is one of the worst broilers we've ever tested. Just look at that toast we spread out under it! Now, imagine you were melting some cheese over nachos under the same broiler...

Range Results

TIME TO BOIL 48 OUNCES OF WATER It took about ten minutes on average, but got as fast as four and a half minutes on the front right outer burner. Three of the burners have boil time under nine minutes—a nice balance if you have to bring a couple dishes to a boil quickly but still wanted to simmer others.

MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE REACHED ON BURNER The surface of a pan hit 757ºF on the left front burner, while other burners got between 557º-642ºF. This is a high performer compared to other ranges we’ve tested, with a score of 8/10.

MINIMUM TEMPERATURE REACHED ON BURNER On its lowest setting, the left front burner kept a pan at just 84ºF. That might be too low—but other burners hovered between 99º-163º F. This is a good performer compared to the other ranges we’ve tested, with a score of 7.6/10.

Should you buy it?

Even on sale, we think the Kenmore 95053 is just too expensive. We much prefer the almost identical Frigidaire Professional FPEF3077QF. It looks better, its controls are more straightforward, and it's even manufactured by the same company as the Kenmore.

So, if you like the Kenmore 95053, why not save $50 and get the better-looking Frigidaire instead?
