Design & Usability

The G7CG6064XS has an understated charm.

Like a black dress or a nice pair of jeans, the Whirlpool G7CG6064XS is appropriate for most occasions.

Sure it may not be the most striking rangetop out there, but most people don't want striking. They want understated simplicity, and that's what this Whirlpool delivers. Like a black dress or a nice pair of jeans, the Whirlpool G7CG6064XS is appropriate for most occasions and should fit into any kitchen regardless of the theme.

The G7CG6064XS’s control panel does nothing to detract from the uncomplicated aesthetic. Each of the four burners has it’s own dial, and each features a simple Low to Hi indicator. Despite their stainless sheen, the dials are in fact plastic. But they're also dishwasher safe, so don’t judge them too harshly.

Rangetop Performance

The cage-like grates are unnecessary, this cooktop is no beast.

Predictably—for a gas range—the G7CG6064XS does not have a great deal of temperature diversity. We recorded an average high temperature of 424ºF on the bottoms of our test pans, with the front-left Power burner reaching a maximum temperature of 451ºF. Those temperatures, while by no means stellar, should suffice for most high-temp cooking needs.

The G7CG6064XS‘s boiling performance made up for the woeful low temperatures.

Unfortunately things are pretty dire on the low end of the heat spectrum. The lowest temperature we recorded on the G7CG6064XS was 158ºF, with an average temperature of 198ºF. While you should still be able to simmer, you may want to think twice about melting chocolate.

Fortunately the G7CG6064XS‘s boiling performance made up for the woeful low temperatures. The two Power burners are indeed aptly named with each able to boil 48 oz of water in under six minutes.

Conclusion

Some may balk at the price, but the G7CG2064XS has a lot to offer.

The G7CG206XS isn't a life-changing appliance, and $1,099 is pretty steep for an entire range—let alone a rangetop. Nevertheless, this cooktop's high temperature and boiling performance are fairly impressive. Sure, the simmer burners are a tad overpowered but boiling and high-temp cooking distinguished this Whirlpool from other gas cooktops. You could do far worse than the G7CG206XS.
