Though a smaller share of the market, gas ranges offer some marked advantages over electric ranges. Gas controls are much more responsive, allowing near-instant temperature changes rather than the few minutes of latency with electric units. Here are our current top-rated gas ranges.

KitchenAid Architect Series II KGRS308BSS ($1,614-$1,715)

The KitchenAid Architect Series II KGRS308BSS is an exceptional, expensive gas range, but the price is justified. After running it through our extensive tests, it's one of the top-performing models on the market. The three non-simmer burners boiled six cups of water in under 10 minutes (one of them boils in as little as 5 minutes), which is phenomenal. However, it had marginal simmering abilities, so keep an eye on your sauce. It took slightly longer than average to heat up to 350°F, but it maintained consistent temperature, meaning that food wasn't overcooked or burnt on the outside, and raw inside. All in all, this is a great piece of hardware if you have the money.

GE JGB600SETSS ($957-$1,099)

GE's JGB600SETSS is an affordable, effective range with a particularly great oven. We called it a baker's delight in our full review, thanks to even and consistent temperatures in the oven itself. The broiler and stovetop could stand to be somewhat more effective, and it's thin on the extra features that characterize today's high-end ranges. But for the price, this GE is really one of the finest conventional ovens we've ever tested.

Kenmore 72903 ($1,100-$1,199)

The Kenmore 72903 is a fine choice if your primary motivation for buying a new range is a slick design. We particularly like the recessed burners beneath continuous grating. Performance is a wall-ball short of a home run, though, with slightly underpowered rear burners and an oven that can't quite reach the highest temperatures we expect. But it's perfectly suitable for the casual cook, surging to 350°F in under 7 minutes and maintaining consistent mid-range temps.
